pinion drive of speedometer HELP!!!!!

i have a 1958 vespa allstate got running and took on ride runs great but the speed will not read took apart the front gear and saw the gear was bad got a new on same one and is too small will not hit the axle gear. come to find out some one else restored the scooter and got the wrong gear for it is there any way to find out what the correct gear was
